Financial markets are heading into the final week of September with attention focused on the Federal Reserve’s renewed tightening cycle, elevated U.S. Treasury yields and the possibility of another interest-rate increase before the end of the year.
The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark federal funds rate by 25 basis points to a target range of 3.75% – 4.00% at its September 15 –16 meeting. The decision was unanimous. The central bank said economic activity was expanding at a solid pace, while inflation remained elevated and uncertainty around the economic outlook was still high.

Treasury Yields Stay Near Multi-Year Highs
The rate outlook has continued to put pressure on the U.S. bond market.
The 10-year Treasury yield reached around 5.23% on September 25, while the 30-year yield climbed above 5.50%. The move highlights growing sensitivity in the bond market to expectations for the future path of U.S. interest rates.
Higher Treasury yields can increase borrowing costs across financial markets and influence valuations of equities, currencies and commodities. The rise in long-term yields has therefore become an important factor as investors reassess the outlook for U.S. monetary policy.
Another Rate Increase Remains in Focus
The September rate decision has shifted attention toward the Fed’s next policy meeting.
As of September 25, market pricing indicated roughly a 66% probability of another 25-basis-point increase at the October meeting.
The next Federal Open Market Committee meeting is scheduled for October 27–28. The policy decision will depend heavily on incoming economic data, particularly inflation and employment figures released before the meeting.
Gold Faces Pressure From Higher Rates
Gold has also remained sensitive to the changing interest-rate outlook.
Spot gold was trading around $4,275 per ounce on September 25, while the metal was heading for a weekly decline of approximately 2.4%.
Higher Treasury yields can increase the opportunity cost of holding gold because the metal does not generate interest income. Expectations of further monetary tightening can therefore weigh on demand for the precious metal.
Oil prices also remained an important factor for markets. Crude prices fell roughly 3% on September 25 as concerns over potential supply disruptions eased amid developments surrounding U.S.-Iran negotiations. However, geopolitical risks continue to create uncertainty for energy markets and the broader inflation outlook.

U.S. Equities Remain Resilient
Despite elevated bond yields, U.S. equities continued to show resilience.
On September 25, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.93%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.51% and the Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.48%.
Strength in technology and artificial-intelligence-related stocks helped support equities, although higher interest rates remain an important consideration for market valuations.
For forex, gold and index markets, the combination of elevated Treasury yields, persistent inflation concerns and changing expectations for the Fed’s next move could remain a source of volatility as October approaches.
The immediate focus is now on incoming U.S. economic data and the October 27–28 Federal Reserve meeting. Evidence of persistent inflation or stronger-than-expected economic activity could reinforce expectations for another rate increase, while signs of cooling price pressures could alter expectations for the policy path.
